Changing lives in a 10-day trip: Officer Jason Johnson is making a difference in the lives of Bayview/Hunters Point children. An officer at the Bayview District Station, he is active with many youth organizations–including the Willie Mays Boys & Girls Club at Hunters Point.
In 2012, Johnson developed a mentorship program designed to connect African-American youngsters to their cultural heritage far beyond their neighborhood. Operation Genesis was created as a way to instill pride and a sense of self-discovery in these students by helping them understand their roots. Since 2013, the non-profit organization has taken 18 students on an all-expenses-paid, 10-day trip to Ghana, where they’ve had the opportunity to explore and learn about that West African nation through culturally enriching activities.
“I want to let the young people know that the world is bigger than their local environment,” says Johnson. “A lot of the kids I deal with have little idea about the exciting world outside. There’s so much more to life than what they experience in that small area.”
